Postpartum basics: what I actually used after birth
Nobody really explains how weird postpartum recovery feels until you’re actually in it.
Some things I bought barely got touched, and other things ended up permanently living beside my bed for weeks. This is the realistic version of what I actually used postpartum
The basics
These were the things I reached for constantly in the early days postpartum.
Maternity pads
The bleeding after birth is very different from a normal period, especially during the first week or two. Proper maternity pads were way more comfortable than trying to use normal pads too early.
Peri bottle
This was genuinely one of the most useful things I bought. Using warm water while going to the toilet just made everything feel a little less awful in those first few days.
Comfortable underwear
High-waisted soft underwear ended up being the only thing I wanted to wear for a while — especially anything that didn’t dig into my stomach.
Stool softener
Nobody warns you enough about the fear surrounding the first postpartum poo. Stool softeners made things feel much less stressful.
If you’re still preparing for birth as well, my Hospital bag essentials guide overlaps with a lot of these basics because half the useful postpartum things are things you’ll want immediately after delivery anyway.
Pain relief
I kept pain relief nearby constantly during the early recovery days. Having it ready instead of searching for it half asleep at 3am helped more than I expected.
Cooling pads
One of the few “extra” products I actually kept using. They felt soothing and helped things feel less uncomfortable during the early recovery stage.
What helps: Products I actually used
Frida Mom disposable High Wasted Underwear. Really comfortable early on and doesn’t put pressure on the incision
High-waisted underwear.Sits above the incision and stays comfortable even as you heal
Peri bottle. Much gentler and more comfortable than wiping during the first few days postpartum.
Recovery extras + C-section recovery
A lot of postpartum content online becomes very aesthetic very quickly, but honestly, comfort mattered more than anything else.
Loose clothing
I basically rotated between oversized pyjamas and soft lounge sets for weeks. Anything restrictive immediately became irritating.
Extra pillows
One of the most useful things in the house postpartum. Sitting comfortably, feeding, sleeping, or even getting out of bed felt easier with extra support.
Large water bottle
I massively underestimated how thirsty postpartum recovery could feel, especially overnight.
If you had a C-section
The biggest thing for me was avoiding pressure around the incision area.
High-waisted underwear felt much more comfortable
Loose clothing helped avoid rubbing
Support binders seem very mixed — some people swear by them and others hate them
Silicone scar sheets felt more like a later recovery item rather than an immediate postpartum essential
A lot of the recovery side also overlaps with my C-section recovery essentials guide because some things become much more useful depending on how you delivered.
Final thoughts
Postpartum recovery does not need to look perfectly organised or aesthetic.
Most of the things that genuinely helped were simple practical basics that made everyday life slightly easier while recovering and trying to look after a newborn at the same time.
This isn’t professional advice — just a simple breakdown of what I’ve found helpful.
Most of this is easier to understand visually.
I’ve put all my guides into one place so you can browse them properly.
