Sleep regression ages explained simply
Sometimes baby sleep changes so suddenly it honestly feels personal.
One week they’re sleeping okay-ish, then suddenly they’re awake constantly, fighting naps, needing more comfort, or acting like bedtime is offensive.
A lot of the time, these sleep changes line up with development. That doesn’t magically make it easier when you’re exhausted, but it can make it feel a bit less random.
This is just a simple breakdown of the ages people usually notice the biggest sleep changes.
If you’re currently deep in the “why is nobody sleeping?” stage, my Why Your Baby Won’t Sleep at Night guide explains some of the other common reasons sleep suddenly becomes difficult too
4–10 months: the stage that catches people off guard
Around 4 months, sleep cycles start maturing, which is why sleep suddenly becomes much lighter and more broken.
This is usually the stage where parents say:
“they actually slept better as a newborn.”
Then around 8–10 months, things can suddenly feel chaotic again because babies are:
crawling
pulling up
becoming more aware
developing separation anxiety
A lot of babies suddenly:
wake more overnight
resist naps
want more reassurance
practise skills in the cot
Honestly, this stage can feel exhausting because they’re developing physically and emotionally at the same time.
And this is usually where parents realise routines aren’t magical after all.
If feeding and tiredness cues also suddenly feel confusing around this stage, my Newborn Feeding Explained Simply and Baby Cues Explained guides explain some of the overlap between hunger, comfort, overstimulation, and tiredness too.
What helps: Products I actually used
Room Thermometer.A room thermometer also helps way more than I expected, especially when the weather randomly changes overnight and the bedroom suddenly feels completely different.
Sleeping Bag. A double-zip sleeping bag genuinely makes middle-of-the-night changes less annoying because you can unzip from the bottom instead of taking the whole thing off.
Swaddle Up or Traditional Swaddle. If your baby keeps startling themselves awake, some babies settle really well in traditional arms-down swaddles, while others prefer the arms-up styles where they can keep their hands near their face.
A blackout blind genuinely helped more than I expected, especially during lighter evenings and early morning wake-ups. I underestimated how much brightness affected settling.
12–18 months: when sleep suddenly gets chaotic again
Around this stage, some babies and toddlers suddenly:
stand up repeatedly
practise walking
resist naps
wake more overnight
fight bedtime harder
want more reassurance
This stage can feel especially frustrating because sleep may have actually improved before this.
A lot of toddlers suddenly become much more emotional, opinionated, and aware of separation, which is partly why sleep can feel harder again too.
Usually normal:
shorter naps
bedtime resistance
clinginess
wanting extra comfort
temporary sleep disruption
Worth checking:
fever or illness
breathing concerns
persistent pain signs
poor feeding
extreme lethargy
symptoms lasting much longer than expected
If something genuinely feels “off,” trust that instinct.
If illness might be affecting sleep too, Baby’s First Cold may help you work out what’s normal vs what might need more attention.
If sleep suddenly feels chaotic alongside teething, my Baby Teething Timeline Explained guide breaks down what usually happens at different stages too.
Final thought
Sleep regressions can feel endless when you’re in them, especially when sleep suddenly changes overnight.
A lot of the time, though, these phases line up with development, new skills, and growing awareness — even if it doesn’t feel like it at 2am.
This isn’t professional advice — just a simple breakdown of what I’ve found helpful.
Most of this is easier to understand visually.

FAQs
What age is the hardest sleep regression?
For a lot of parents, it’s the 4 month one because sleep can suddenly change overnight. Babies often start waking more between sleep cycles around this age.
How long do sleep regressions last?
Usually a few weeks, but it varies. Development, teething, illness, and routines can all affect how long sleep feels disrupted.
Can teething affect sleep?
Definitely. Teething can make babies more unsettled, especially overnight. A lot of sleep changes around 6–18 months overlap with teething too.
Why is my baby suddenly fighting naps?
Sometimes babies become more aware, more active, or distracted by new skills. Sleep can temporarily become harder during developmental stages.
When should sleep changes be checked?
Things like fever, breathing concerns, poor feeding, or extreme lethargy are always worth checking. Trust your instincts if something feels off.
